Founded in 1846 by Charles Scribner, Scribner was originally a publisher of religious books. By 1870, the company had turned to literature. Charles Scribner II took over in 1879, and under this guidance the company became identified with the giants of twentieth-century American literature. In 1978, Scribner acquired Atheneum, and in 1984 merged with Macmillan. Today, under publisher Nan Graham, Scribner has a distinguished list of writers that includes Annie Proulx, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award; Frank McCourt, and Don DeLillo. Scribner also publishes #1 bestselling author Stephen King, Anthony Doerr, and a host of other luminary authors.
