A vigorously sharp and contemporary look at the humorous absurdity of the creative industries as experienced by young people not already established within them.

“To me, personally, Anna Haifisch is one of the greatest artists of this time we live in, right now. I love everything she makes. Her comic series, The Artist, is one of my favourite creative works ever made. I’ve read each strip dozens of times, and each panel makes me feel good. I’ve cried at how much of myself I recognise in her work. I think of specific panels and dialogue and become instantly happy”. - Nick Gazin, Vice comics editor

Anna Haifisch’s idiosyncratic, episodic comic chronicles the experiences of a young artist in their formative years, satirising the exclusive and frequently absurd world of fine art. Plagued by doubts and anxiety, the artist is confronted with constant setbacks punctuated with occasional, surprising glimpses of recognition.

Topics covered include the dichotomy between young and old money (in strip An Artist Joins a Tech Company), the absurd appearance of any Art world wealth at all to those struggling (in strip An Artist Deals with Rejection) and the undervaluing of creative skill sets (in strip The Artist Goes on Trial and the Court finds the Defendant Guilty of Total Uselessness).

Based on Haifisch’s own experiences as an illustrator in Germany and the USA, material from The Artist has most recently run as a serialised comic in Vice magazine to critical acclaim.

With her economic line, limited colour palettes, and simple, lanky limbed characters, Haifisch has encapsulated the outwardly nihilistic and inwardly ambitious sentiments of a generation with snarky aplomb. With all of its wry observations cloaked in self-deprecating humour and all strips presented in almost-florescent full colour, The Artist is the perfectly formed slice of internet generation humour for the bookshop window.
